Bio:
Raj was born in Bangalore, India and grew up in Madison, Wisconsin. At college, he was on the Dean’s List and excelled in Organic Chemistry, Physics, Biology, and Statistics. After college, he was awarded a federal grant to conduct genetic research on immune disorders at the National Institutes of Health, in Bethesda, MD. He then interned for Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton where he helped New York City residents with their immigration and landlord/tenant problems.
At law school Raj received the Dean’s Scholarship, was Executive Editor of the Public Interest Law Journal, and received honors for legal research and writing. He also clerked for the Oneida Nation Tribe of Indians of Wisconsin and defended them from state attempts at confiscating tribal land and imposing taxes on tribal income.
Raj then obtained further legal education at Northwestern University School of law, where he earned a Masters in Law. As a student attorney at Northwestern’s Human Rights Clinic he aided in the prosecution of Chicago Police officer, who tortured minority suspects and witnesses. He also published an article on torture law that has been used in law school curricula around the country.
Raj began his legal career in the courtroom, clerking for The Honorable Alexander P. White of the Circuit Court of Cook County (2004-2005). He was then recruited by KPMG, LLP, where he advised multinational corporations on complex cross border tax, investment, advertising, and manufacturing matters. Raj left KPMG, LLP to go back to the courtroom and worked as a Public Defender. He represented clients charged with everything from DUI, to white-collar embezzlement, to sexual assault and homicide. A consummate trial attorney, he always took cases to trial when prosecutors made unacceptable offers and has a record of winning acquittals in both the jury and court trial settings.
