Traumatic Brain Injury

What is a Traumatic Brain Injury?

Injury to the brain can result in a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Depending on which area(s) of the brain is affected, the severity of a traumatic brain injury will vary. The brain damage may consist of internal bleeding, nerve damage, and broken cranial bones. A mild traumatic brain injury may cause temporary confusion and headaches; on the other hand, a severe traumatic brain injury may be fatal.

Traumatic Brain Injury Symptoms

There are two classifications for traumatic brain injury: mild and severe. The signs and symptoms of these classifications are the following:

Mild Traumatic Brain Injuries:

  • Brief period of unconsciousness
  • Headaches
  • Confusion
  • Dizziness or loss of balance
  • Blurred vision
  • Changes in behavior
  • Memory or concentration problems
  • Amnesia immediately prior to and following the injury
  • Ringing in the ears

Severe Traumatic Brain Injuries:

  • Persistent headaches and nausea
  • Slurred speech
  • Loss of coordination
  • Periodic vomiting
  • Seizures
  • Inability to wake from sleep
  • Dilated Pupil(s)
  • Weakness/Numbness in the extremities
  • Deep confusion

Traumatic Brain Injury Causes

A traumatic brain injury is usually the result of a quick, violent impact to the head that pushes the brain against the inside of the skull. This impact can bruise the brain, tear nerve fibers, and cause bleeding. A traumatic brain injury may be caused by an auto accident or motorcycle accident. In some cases, a shattered piece of the skull may enter the brain tissue and cause a traumatic brain injury.

Traumatic Brain Injury Consequences

A traumatic brain injury victim will most likely spend a certain amount of time in the hospital. In the case of a severe traumatic brain injury, medical supervision will be required. Since the brain controls thought processes, movements, behaviors, and sensations, a traumatic brain injury may have extensive physical and psychological effects. The immediate physical effects include bruising and swelling. The intracranial pressure increases when swelling occurs in the injured brain tissue. Unfortunately, the increased pressure will cause vital blood vessels to rupture; this could potentially cause brain damage or, in severe cases, death.

Traumatic Brain Injury Treatment

When the patient first arrives in the hospital, a trauma surgeon and the surgeon's medical team will perform an initial assessment. The patient will then be scheduled for surgery and reside in the trauma unit for a period of time until the most important surgical interventions are completed. Since the patient may still need additional minor surgeries, the patient will be placed into rehabilitation in order to possibly gain some lost functions. Before releasing the patient home, the rehabilitation team will try to help the patient recover as much of the lost functions as possible. After being released, the patient will most likely need to follow up with physicians and physical therapy for a period of time.
