Neck Strain
What is a Neck Strain?
A neck strain is an injury in which the muscles or tendons connected to the back of the neck are stretched or torn. There are seven cervical vertebrae connected by these neck ligaments. Ligaments are bands or sheets of fibrous tissue that connect two or more bones or cartilages. They also serve as a support for fasciae and muscles.
Neck Strain Symptoms
The following are symptoms of a neck strain:
- Swelling/Puffiness
- Redness
- Bruising
- Increased Pain with Movement
- Lack of Mobility
Causes of a Neck Strain
Many people will have a strained neck at some point in their life. It is fairly common to experience a neck strain due to a:
- Whiplash accident
- Car accident
- Blow to the neck or head
- Physical sport
- Slip and fall accident
Neck strains may also be caused by exercising incorrectly and trying to self "crack" one's own neck without the authority of a medically trained professional.
Neck Strain Consequences
Besides discomfort and pain, a neck strain may also cause some degree of difficulty when moving the head. A neck brace may be necessary until the neck ligaments adequately heal. Unfortunately, this will also limit a person's mobility.
Neck Strain Treatment
The RICE method is usually useful in treating a strain.
- R – Rest
- I – Ice
- C – Compression
- E – Elevation
Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs), such as aspirin or acetaminophen, can also help with the pain and swelling. Once the swelling and pain begins to diminish, it is recommended for the patient to begin working on strengthening the neck muscles by using various motion exercises. In addition to strengthening and motion exercises, assisting devices, such as a neck brace, may be needed.
