Cervical Radiculopathy

What is Cervical Radiculopathy?

If one of the nerve roots near the cervical vertebrae is compressed, it will damage or disturb the nerve function; this is called cervical radiculopathy. Unfortunately, cervical radiculopathy can injure the nerve roots in the cervical area. Depending on the location of the damaged nerve roots, a person may experience pain and loss of sensation in various upper extremities.

Cervical Radiculopathy Symptoms

One such cervical radiculopathy symptom is when pain worsens with neck movement. The following are other cervical radiculopathy symptoms that may be experienced in the neck, upper back, shoulders, arms, and/or hands:

Causes of Cervical Radiculopathy

Cervical radiculopathy can be caused by increased pressure in the nerve roots. At times, a ruptured disc may cause unwanted pressure on the nerve roots because the gel-like nucleus pulpous inside the disc will compress the nerve root. Other factors that may increase pressure in the nerve roots are the degenerative changes in bones and arthritis.

Cervical Radiculopathy Consequences

Cervical radiculopathy will cause pain to the neck region. Additionally, there may be some referred pain that radiates from the back into the shoulders and down the arms to the hands. It may be difficult to do any strenuous or physical activities. These include work, house, or sports-related activities.

Cervical Radiculopathy Treatment

If the above is not a solution to the pain and discomfort, surgery may be required. In order to provide pain relief, the surgeon may remove part of the disc or bone (lamina). Vertebrae bones may also be fused to alleviate pain.
