Motorcycle Safety Equipment
According to national statistics, approximately 37% of passenger motor vehicle accidents result in injury or death while 83% of motorcycle accidents result in injury or death. These percentages are not as shocking when comparing the safety features in passenger vehicles to motorcycles. The main difference between cars and motorcycles is that cars have a passenger compartment that insulates the driver and passengers. In an accident, those in a car are less likely to be ejected from the vehicle. Passenger vehicles are also equipped with seat belts to restrain and airbags to cushion its occupants against impact. Motorcycles have no such insulation, seat belts, or reliable airbags. Upon impact with a vehicle or an obstacle on the road, a motorcyclist is likely to be thrown from the bike and sustain serious injuries or, possibly, death.
Motorcycle Safety Equipment List
Personal protective equipment is extremely necessary in protecting a motorcyclist from injury. At a minimum, a motorcyclist needs the following personal protective equipment:
- Helmet – It should meet Federal helmet standards.
- Gloves – They should be full fingered and made of leather, Cordura, or Kevlar.
- Jacket – It should be made of leather, ballistic nylon, Cordura, or Kevlar; it should also be made with extra padding to protect joints.
- Pants – They should be made of leather, ballistic nylon, Cordura, or Kevlar; they should also be made with extra padding to protect joints.
- Boots – They should cover the ankles.
- Goggles or Helmet Visor – They are important because they keep debris from entering the eyes at high speeds.
- Vests – They should be made with reflective material and high visibility colors.
Along with wearing the correct safety equipment, riders need to understand the different motorcycle rules, take the appropriate training courses to ensure that they are ready to maneuver a motorcycle, and know how to properly react if something unexpected should happen while on the road.
