Mexican man who says he was raped by priest files lawsuit naming Mahony, Mexican cardinal

A Mexican man who says he was repeatedly raped by a priest who was shuttled between southern Mexico and Los Angeles in the late 1980s filed a lawsuit Tuesday, alleging that Cardinal Roger Mahony and his Mexican counterpart conspired to hide the alleged predator’s 20-plus years of abuses to protect the church from scandal.

 

The complaint filed in Los Angeles relies on a more than 200-year-old U.S. law allowing foreign victims of human rights abuses to bring their perpetrators to justice in U.S. courts. The civil suit on behalf of the now 25-year-old victim is the first known to use the Alien Tort Claims Act of 1789 to demand a jury trial and compensation for offenses committed abroad.

Jury awards widow $1.2 million in Scranton malpractice trial

A Lackawanna County jury awarded $1.2 million to the widow of a Tunkhannock man in a medical malpractice suit against Tyler Memorial Hospital and two physicians.

 

The verdict, returned Monday evening after four hours of deliberation, found the hospital and physicians Daniel Costner and Jeffrey Lubin were negligent in the death of Michael Scarpa, a 55-year-old retired Long Island Rail Road worker.

Doctor in endoscopy trial testifies vials of sedative were too large

The 50-milliliter vials of anesthetic linked to a hepatitis C outbreak would have been enough to knock out a 600-pound gorilla during a colonoscopy, an anesthesiologist testified Tuesday.

 

Using the example to show why the large vials of propofol were unnecessary in an endoscopy center, Dr. Nicola D’Attellis said only 35 milliliters of anesthetic would be required to sedate an ape for the typical 14-minute endoscopy procedure.

Recall: 600,000 Toyota Sienna minivans

Toyota Motor Sales on Friday announced a voluntary recall of about 600,000 1998-2010 Toyota Sienna minivans “to address potential corrosion in the spare tire carrier cable,” according to an April 16 Toyota press release.

 

The recall covers 2WD minivans equipped with a spare tire and driven in cold climates with high road salt usage. Vehicles currently registered in the District of Columbia and the following states are involved in this recall: Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, Vermont, Wisconsin and West Virginia
