Beechmont residents file class-action suit over plant spill

Eight weeks after a chemical spill at the Nuplex Resins plant sent vapors through sewer pipes into the Beechmont neighborhood, three residents have filed a class-action lawsuit against the company.

 

“I want to make sure they don’t do this again,” said Cherie Wentworth, a Gillette Avenue resident whose son, Calvin, was diagnosed with “chemical exposure” on Feb. 4, according to his discharge papers from Kosair Children’s Hospital. “It was a nightmare.”

Big Bay lawsuit settled for $1.1M

GULFPORT — A $1.1 million settlement has been reached in the lawsuit stemming from the 2004 collapse of Big Bay Lake Dam

 

The settlement was reached Thursday after a two-hour conference between the attorneys for 123 plaintiffs from Lamar and Marion counties and those for Land Partners Limited Partnership and Big Bay Lake Inc.

Officials said $1.1 million will be divided among the plaintiffs.

Time nearly up on malpractice suit against missing doctor

Debbie Stockton didn’t know her obstetrician was a drug addict when her son William was born in 1989 with extensive nerve damage to his left arm.

 

But when the boy grew into a teenager and his atrophied arm didn’t improve, Stockton sought legal advice and learned that Dr. Howard Offenbach had checked himself into a drug treatment center within a week of William’s birth to kick a years-long Valium and hydrocodone habit.

 

So in 2007, Stockton sued for an unspecified amount, claiming that Offenbach caused William’s injury by failing to order emergency surgery when the boy’s shoulder became pinned beneath his mother’s pubic bone during a difficult delivery.

US jury’s Neurontin ruling to cost Pfizer $141 mln

NEW YORK, March 25 (Reuters) – Pfizer Inc (PFE.N) violated federal racketeering law by improperly promoting the epilepsy drug Neurontin, a Boston jury found on Thursday, and the world’s largest drugmaker was ordered to pay $47 million in damages.

 

Under federal RICO law (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations act) the penalty is automatically tripled, so the finding will cost Pfizer $141 million.

Pfizer said it would appeal the decision.

TSU grad wins $9 million in Wal-Mart suit

A Houston woman who was wrongly arrested in 2008 at the Walmart in Meyer Park has won a $9 million jury verdict.

 

Nitra Gipson, 24, filed a civil lawsuit against the retailer after store employees accused her of trying to exchange counterfeit Walmart money orders for cash. She was arrested and spent two days in jail. The Harris County District Attorney’s Office declined to pursue charges after it was determined that the money orders were genuine.
