Former school bus driver files lawsuit against Cobb schools

A former Cobb County school bus driver claims she was fired for speaking publicly at board of education meetings

 

Wanda Smith, a district driver for 21 years, says her right to free speech was violated in a lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Atlanta. Smith was terminated in April 2009. She had been driving a special needs bus.

 

Beginning in 2008, Smith spoke during the “public comments” section of several school board meetings. At a December 2008 meeting, Smith urged the board to deny a proposal that involved putting GPS throughout the district’s fleet at a cost of about $2 million.

LSU Police veteran files bias lawsuit

A 22-year veteran of the LSU Police Department sued the university Thursday, claiming she was denied the position of chief of police because she is a woman.

 

Maj. Martha Helen Haire, who holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree and is an FBI National Academy graduate, alleges in her state court lawsuit that she was “clearly qualified for the position.’’

Three More Decide to Sue Bloomberg L.P.

Three more women have been permitted to join a class-action lawsuit that accuses Bloomberg L.P., the financial services and media company founded by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, of discriminating against pregnant employees, a federal judge said Thursday.

 

The three, who only came forward in the past couple of weeks, bring to 79 the number of plaintiffs in the case. But Judge Loretta A. Preska of Federal District Court in Manhattan, clearly eager to pick up the pace of the long-running case, declared that they would be the last three.

Family of Jacob Feichtner awarded nearly $3 million in wrongful death lawsuit against Terrance Hough Jr.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The family of one of the victims of Terrance Hough Jr. was awarded nearly $3 million this month as part of a wrongful death lawsuit filed against the former Cleveland firefighter.

 

Relatives of Jacob Feichtner, one of three people killed over the Fourth of July holiday in 2007, was awarded $2.8 million by Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Hollie Gallagher.

College friends allege beating by off-duty cops

Two college friends said they were pummeled by two plainclothes Chicago police officers last month outside a restaurant in the Bucktown neighborhood.

In a federal lawsuit filed this week against the city, management consultant Matthew

 

Clark and University of Chicago lecturer Gregory Malandrucco say they were brutally beaten in an unprovoked attack in the parking lot of Arturo’s Tacos, 2001 N. Western Ave., about 3 a.m. on Feb. 7.
