City Reaches $33 Million Settlement Over Strip Searches

For the third time in a decade, New York City has agreed to pay millions of dollars to settle a lawsuit stemming from the illegal strip searches of thousands of nonviolent prisoners.
The settlement, which was announced on Monday, provides $33 million to the roughly 100,000 people who were strip-searched after being charged with misdemeanors and taken to Rikers Island and other city correction facilities

Cooper Tire Is Liable for Fatal Minivan Rollover, Jury Finds
March 20 (Bloomberg) — Cooper Tire & Rubber Co., the second-biggest U.S. tiremaker, is liable for the fatal rollover of a minivan in 2007, a Des Moines, Iowa, jury found.
The Polk County District Court jury yesterday found that the Cooper tire that failed on the 1997 Chrysler Corp. minivan wasn’t state-of-the art when it was designed and manufactured. Jurors awarded $28.4 million to Ivon Toe, a 39-year-old woman rendered quadriplegic in the accident. Her two children received a total of $65,000.

Texas vows to fight health care bill in court
AUSTIN — Texas officials are planning to join at least eight other states in filing a constitutional challenge to a new health care reform bill as soon as President Obama signs it into law.
The president is expected to sign the law today while a companion piece of legislation is debated in the U.S. Senate.
Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott said the law violates state sovereignty and individual rights by requiring individuals to buy health insurance or pay a tax penalty

Syracuse resident considering lawsuit after police kick down his front door looking for gunman
Syracuse, NY — A Syracuse resident whose door was kicked in by police officers searching for a gunman in October is pursuing a federal lawsuit against the city.
The Oct. 20 incident at Jeffrey Beck’s house at 617 Marcellus St. on the Near West Side led to an apology by former Syracuse Police Chief Gary Miguel and an offer to replace his door and his dog, Sadie, who escaped and was killed by a car.
