Texas Supreme Court tosses $15.8 million verdict in case involving illegal immigrant

The Texas Supreme Court threw out a $15.8 million verdict Friday, ruling unanimously that lawyers improperly introduced evidence that a gravel truck driver involved in a 2002 accident that killed four members of a Wise County family was an illegal immigrant.

By repeatedly mentioning the truck driver’s immigration status, lawyers for the Hughes family clearly sought to inflame jurors’ passions against the driver and his employer, TXI Transportation Co., the court ruled

New hope for Illinois’ mentally ill nursing-home residents

Thousands of psychiatric patients are likely to move out of nursing homes and into community-based settings in the next five years under a landmark legal agreement designed to reshape Illinois’ troubled long-term care system.

The agreement, expected to be filed Monday in federal court in Chicago, lays out a schedule for state officials to offer approximately 4,500 mentally ill nursing home residents the choice to move out of two dozen large facilities known as “institutions for mental diseases,” or IMDs, and into smaller settings that experts say are more appropriate and less expensive.

Normandy Park couple sue Toyota over vehicle’s lost value

A Normandy Park couple have sued Toyota in federal court, demanding that the company either take back the vehicle they just bought or reimburse them for its loss in value since the automaker’s sudden-acceleration troubles became news.

The lawsuit alleges that the issues plaguing Toyota violate the state’s Consumer Protection Act and amount to a breach of contract. The lawsuit is a proposed class action and, if certified by a federal judge, could apply to other Toyota owners in Washington with similar issues.

City agrees to settle lawsuit by woman cleared of charge

TAMPA – The city has agreed to pay $35,000 to settle a lawsuit brought by a former school aide who was cleared of a charge she molested a 6-year-old child.

 

The Tampa City Council is scheduled to vote April 1 on whether to approve the settlement with Tamika Lane-Gardner, who was arrested in 2006 on a charge of felony sexual battery.

Fan sues Romero, alleging injury

CLEARWATER, Fla. – J.C. Romero is being sued by the Florida man who accused the Phillies pitcher of striking him after a game at Tropicana Field last season.

 

Robert Eaton, 26, of New Port Richey, filed a lawsuit March 3 in Pinellas County, claiming that Romero caused him serious and permanent injury on June 25, 2009, according to a report in the St. Petersburg Times.
