School districts to file suit over funding

A coalition of school districts will file a lawsuit against the state of Indiana tomorrow over the way it distributes money to schools, according to a press release.
Hamilton Southeastern Schools, which has a school board meeting tonight, will lead the effort and be joined by Franklin Township Community Schools and Middlebury
Community Schools. The district has said it was considering such a lawsuit to argue the state’s funding formula is flawed.

City to settle suit with wrongly imprisoned man
The city of Chicago has agreed to settle a federal lawsuit filed by a man who contends he spent 25 years in prison for a rape he did not commit because an analyst at the old Chicago police crime lab withheld key evidence.
Jerry Miller alleged the analyst should have provided Cook County prosecutors with the results of a test that would have excluded him as a suspect in a rape nearly three decades ago. DNA testing eventually cleared Miller, now 51, who was pardoned in 2008.

First Lawsuit Filed In Kleen Energy Blast
Two electricians who survived the Kleen Energy power plant explosionin Middletownhave filed the first lawsuit against the contractor conducting the gas line purge that claimed the lives of six people and injured 26 others.
While some of the victims headed to court and investigators continued trying to piece together whether criminal charges would be filed, the national board that sets regulations for gas purges was prepared to discuss the tragedy at a meeting later this week in San Francisco.

Lawsuit gives details of sexual harassment complaint against Decatur mayor
A lawsuit filed Monday by Decatur’s former chief financial officer against the City Council president gives details of a previously settled sexual harassment complaint against the mayor, the Decatur Daily reports.
The lawsuit by ex-CFO Gail Busbey says that Decatur Mayor Don Stanford had sexually harassed her and placed her on administrative leave last year, the newspaper reports. The lawsuit says the City Council president violated the terms of the settlement she had made with the city by making defaming and false statements about Busbey.

Ala. woman wins $9.45 million in Wyeth-hormone suit
A Philadelphia jury yesterday ordered Pfizer Inc.’s Wyeth unit to pay $9.45 million to an Alabama woman who claimed that the company’s hormone-replacement drug caused her breast cancer.
The Common Pleas Court jury awarded $3.25 million in compensatory damages and $6 million in punitive damages to Audrey Singleton, a retired school-bus driver from Chatom, Ala. The verdict also included $200,000 to Singleton’s husband for loss of consortium.
