Mentally ill inmates sue Ohio prisons

Mentally ill prisoners in Ohio are more likely to get into trouble and end up back in prison after they are released because state officials turn them loose without the follow-up care they need, a federal lawsuit claimed Wednesday.
The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Cincinnati, asked a judge to order the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction and the Ohio Department of Mental Health to provide the care necessary to help keep mentally ill offenders from returning to prison.

Aptos teen’s family sues over burns from downed powerlines
SANTA CRUZ — A teenager badly injured when he was shocked by a fallen power line near a state beach in late June has filed a lawsuit against the utility company that operates the wires.
Jacob Kirkendall, a 17-year-old Aptos High student with strong family ties in Los Gatos, names Pacific Gas & Electric Co., as well as the county of Santa Cruz and State Parks, as defendants in the suit.

Parents suing school district over assault
Two parents have filed a lawsuit against the Coachella Valley Unified School District and Saul Martinez Elementary School, claiming officials did not protect their then-6-year-old son from sexual assault and sexual harassment.
The lawsuit was filed Feb. 9 against Saul Martinez Principal Delia Alvarez, Superintendent Ricardo Medina and the seven school board members by a North Shore mother and father, who filed anonymously as A. Doe and B. Doe to protect their son.
In February 2009, their son was sexually assaulted with a stick by an older male first-grade student while using a Saul Martinez urinal, according to court reports.

Hispanic, female workers file bias lawsuit vs. MBTA
Hispanic and female MBTA employees slapped the transit agency with a discrimination complaint yesterday, charging a culture of bias has kept them from pay and promotions going to white workers.
The complaint, filed with the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination, alleges Hispanics are relegated to entry-level jobs while white counterparts advance to management posts. Women, it claims, are paid less then men who hold the same jobs.

Wrongful death lawsuit filed against former Homer officers
HOMER — The “unreasonable actions” of two former Homer police officers created a “volatile situation” that resulted in the Feb. 20 shooting death of Bernard Monroe Sr., a lawsuit filed Wednesday in Claiborne Parish District Court alleges.
The wrongful death petition, which names Tim Cox and Joseph Henry as well as the town of Homer as defendants, was filed on behalf of Monroe’s widow, Louise M. Monroe, and the couple’s children, Shaun Monroe, Bernard Monroe Jr., Stephanie Bell and Gerald Monroe.
