Workers File Suit Against Waldorf-Astoria

February 28, 2010

Nine former Waldorf-Astoria employees filed suit against the luxury hotel on Thursday, saying management skimmed their tips.

The workers, all banquet waiters, some who had worked on Park Avenue for 20 years, said they did not receive all the gratuities customers set aside for them.

Instead, according to the lawsuit, hotel management and Hilton Worldwide Inc., violated state labor laws by retaining “service charge” gratuities, intended entirely for the waiters.

Two lawsuits allege racial harassment at Terra Linda High in San Rafael

SAN RAFAEL — A security officer at Terra Linda High School has filed a lawsuit against the school principal and the school district, claiming he has been subjected to repeated racial slurs and harassment.

The lawsuit is the second such action against the school pending in Marin Superior Court.

Al Clethen, 51, alleges that he has been “the subject of racial slurs, verbal racial comments directed at me by (principal Lars) Christensen and other employees.

“Christensen and other employees of the defendants have allowed, permitted, and ratified public display of racial slurs on the public buildings of Terra Linda High School despite complaints by me, students, and parents that the racial slurs be removed and painted over,” said Clethen, who has worked at the school since 2003.

The lawsuit charges that the state’s Connector Authority and its executive director, Jon Kingsdale, violated the immigrants’ right to equal protection under the state and federal constitutions when the administrators last year cut their health coverage through the Commonwealth Care program because of a tight state budget

A Chicago man injured on a mini-trampoline when he was an eighth-grade student at a South Side elementary school 18 years ago has settled a lawsuit with the Chicago Board of Education and a private youth center for almost $14.7 million, his attorneys said Thursday.

Ryan Murray, who was 13 at the time, was injured in a tumbling class on Dec. 14, 1992, at what was then Bryn Mawr Elementary School, 7455 S. Jeffery Blvd., the attorneys said. Murray, now 30, became a quadriplegic after he hit his head as he did a flip off a mini-trampoline onto a mat in the school’s gymnasium, the attorneys said.
