Family of woman killed in Houston fire truck wreck to get $225,000

Houston City Council is set today to approve a $225,000 settlement to be paid to the family of a Houston cyclist killed in a crash between two fire trucks last year.

 

Leigh Boone died two weeks after the March 2009 crash at the intersection of

Westheimer and Dunlavy. The trucks, as it turned out, were speeding to a false alarm.

 

Boone was standing on the corner with her bike when a ladder truck rolled onto her.

The family’s lawyer said his clients also have sought action on preventing future such accidents.

EHarmony settles lawsuit over gay matchmaking

(01-26) 17:16 PST LOS ANGELES — The popular eHarmony online dating service will have to do more to welcome gays and lesbians to its site, under a proposed settlement of a class-action lawsuit announced Tuesday.

Couple says infant son sickened by salmonella

A Barrington couple filed a lawsuit today against a Rhode Island salami maker whose products have been linked to a nationwide salmonella outbreak, saying that their 3-month-old son became ill and was hospitalized after his mother snacked on the food.

 

Jason and Molly Keppler filed the lawsuit in Cook County Circuit Court against Danielle International. The couple is seeking unspecified damages, saying the salami — bought at a Costco in Lake Zurich on New Year’s Eve – left Molly and the couple’s son ill. While

 

Molly Keppler recovered quickly, the boy had to be hospitalized with a 104 fever and bloody diarrhea that persisted for several days.

Testing confirmed that he had been sickened by a strain of salmonella.

It’s not clear how the child was infected.

Dead monorail driver’s mom suing Disney

ORLANDO, Fla., Jan. 26 (UPI) — The mother of a 21-year-old monorail driver killed last summer is suing Florida’s Disney World theme park, court records show.

 

The Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel said Christine Wuennenberg has claimed Disney failed to follow its monorail-safety procedures, leading to the crash that killed her son, Austin, who was driving at the time.

Orange County schools close to desegregation settlement

Orange County school leaders appear close to a settlement with plaintiffs in a historic desegregation case that could free the district from federal court jurisdiction for the first time in nearly 50 years.

 

The School Board could approve the agreement as early as today.

 

The agreement would commit the public school district to a series of actions that would address inequalities that the plaintiffs say still exist. That could mean big changes — including which school-construction projects get higher priority, and possibly where some students would go to school.
