Philadelphia firefighter files 2d racial-bias suit

A white Philadelphia firefighter who settled a racial-discrimination case against the city last year filed another federal lawsuit yesterday, saying the fire commissioner and his top aides had retaliated against him for going to court.

 

Capt. Joseph Lee Jr. was among five white firefighters who settled their 2007 civil-rights suit, which focused on alleged bias in promotions, against the city last January. As part of the settlement, the city pledged to make changes to the promotion process and to refrain from retaliation against the plaintiffs.

Former mayoral aide sues Funkhouser, wife and city

Another former aide to Kansas City Mayor Mark Funkhouser has filed a lawsuit against the mayor, his wife and the city.

 

Shawn Pierce alleged he was the victim of retaliatory termination because he sided with Ruth Bates, a former mayoral aide who previously sued the mayor, his wife, Gloria Squitiro, and the city for alleged harassment and discrimination.

Harassment lawsuit filed vs. scientist on Mars Lander project

A member of the science team for NASA’s 2008 Phoenix Mars Lander mission has sued one of the mission’s co-investigators, Samuel Kounaves, alleging sexual harassment.

 

Research assistant Suzanne Young was part of a Tufts University group that helped build the experiments to analyze and characterize the chemical composition of the Martian soil during the NASA mission, led by the University of Arizona and housed in Tucson.

 

Young’s lawsuit, which also lists Tufts University as a defendant, was filed in Superior Court in Middlesex County, Mass., in December.

ACLU is suing Lancaster youth probation camp

In one case, a young man who spent most of his teen years in Los Angeles County probation camps was awarded a high school diploma – despite the fact he couldn’t read or write.

 

In another, teachers and administrators at Challenger Memorial Youth Center in Lancaster told students to leave classrooms to paint buildings and pull weeds – and then billed the state for instructional days as though the students were in class.

 

These and other allegations are outlined in a class-action lawsuit the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California and other legal groups filed Tuesday against the Probation Department and county Office of Education. The lawsuit alleges the practices at Challenger are among the “most egregious failures to deliver education and rehabilitative services to incarcerated youth ever documented in the nation.”

Chamber of Commerce Considering EPA Lawsuit

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is considering a lawsuit against the Environmental Protection Agency challenging EPA’s plans to regulate greenhouse gases, according to chamber President and CEO Tom Donohue.
