Octuplets mom Nadya Suleman settles her workers’ comp case

The Los Angeles County woman who gave birth to eight children — and was promptly dubbed “Octomom” — has agreed to settle a workers’ compensation case against a hospital where she was injured more than a decade ago.

Nadya Suleman, mother of octuplets and six other children, will receive $40,000 from representatives of Metropolitan State Hospital in Norwalk, according to a copy of the settlement provided to The Times by the California Department of Industrial Relations.

Lawsuit alleges UMC misclassified patients, overcharged millions

A lawsuit seeking class action status has been filed against University Medical Center, claiming the Las Vegas hospital has overcharged thousands of patients millions of dollars over the years by misclassifying them as trauma patients.

The suit, filed Thursday in Clark County District Court, says that on March 31, Karla Reyes-Sandino of Las Vegas was treated for 90 minutes at UMC for neck pain after a car accident.

Stabbing victim files civil suit against family

SALEM — A Salem man who was nearly stabbed to death outside a condominium complex in April has filed a civil lawsuit alleging he was “set up” by his former girlfriend and her mother.

Paul Goodwin, 40, named not only his alleged assailant, Michael Marino, but Marino’s mother, Christine Brault, and grandmother, Jeannette Brault, in a lawsuit filed last week in Salem Superior Court.

Marino, 27, also of Salem, is already facing criminal charges of attempted murder and assault and battery stemming from the April 1 stabbing on First Street.

Potentially deadly ice cream recalled

The Kroger Co. is recalling some of its own branded ice cream because it may contain an allergen that could kill people who are allergic to tree nuts.

Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin announced the recall Monday, saying the Cincinnati-based grocery store chain was concerned that some batches of its Deluxe Chocolate Paradise Ice Cream may contain tree nuts not listed on the label.

Fatal I-75 crash in 2009 spawns lawsuit against Collier teacher

NAPLES — The parents of a 22-year-old Naples woman who died after she was thrown from a sport utility truck are suing a Collier schoolteacher, alleging she was intoxicated and speeding when she rammed into the truck.

John Kelly, the personal representative of his daughter, Bree’s, estate, is suing Andrea M. Kidder and her husband, Matthew P. Kidder, both of Estero.
