Family sues over dress code in downtown district

Members of an African-American family have filed a lawsuit alleging discrimination and unfair enforcement of the dress code at Kansas City’s downtown entertainment district.
The lawsuit, filed Thursday in Jackson County Circuit Court, says Khiana Leapheart and other members of her family were discriminated against when a district nightclub barred them from entering while allowing similarly attired white patrons to enter.

National Dental Management Company Pays $24 Million to Resolve Fraud Allegations
WASHINGTON, Jan. 20 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — The United States today announced that it has settled False Claims Act allegations against FORBA Holdings LLC, a dental management company that provides business management and administrative services to 69 clinics nationwide known as “Small Smiles Centers.” Under the agreement, FORBA will pay the United States and participating states $24 million, plus interest, to resolve allegations that it caused bills to be submitted to state Medicaid programs for medically unnecessary dental services performed on children insured by Medicaid, which is funded jointly by the federal and state governments. FORBA has further agreed to put in place various remedial measures designed to prevent similar unlawful conduct from occurring in the future. The government’s investigation of individual dentists is ongoing, and FORBA is cooperating with that investigation by providing information about dentists who may have violated professional standards.

Honda Recalls Cars, Citing Defect
TOKYO (Reuters) – Honda Motor Co <7267.T> said on Friday it would recall a total 646,000 units of the Fit/Jazz and City models globally, including 140,000 in the United States.
The recall covers the models sold in North America, South America, Europe, South Africa and Asia, but not Japan, a spokeswoman said.
The Fit is Honda’s best-selling model in Japan.
Honda said the recall was to fix a defective master switch, which could cause water to enter the power window switch and in some cases cause a fire.

Russo sues Oakland firm: immigration fraud
Oakland City Attorney John Russo filed a civil lawsuit against an Oakland business on Thursday, claiming it had swindled families out of thousands of dollars by providing them shoddy or fraudulent immigration services.
Russo alleged that the company, American Legal Services, which has offices at the Eastmont Mall, violated a number of laws, including practicing law without a license, advertising legal services without required disclosures, making false and misleading statements and promises to their clients, and claiming to have special influence over immigration officials.

Mass. Couple Sue Bank of America Alleging Erroneous Foreclosure Attempt
Lawyers for owners of a mortgage-free Florida home that Bank of America attempted to foreclose on are bringing an arsenal of legal claims against the banking giant, ranging from obvious claims like conversion and trespass to more unexpected ones like defamation and libel.
Massachusetts residents Charlie and Maria Cardoso, who claimed they bought their second home in Spring Hill, Fla., with cash, sued Bank of America in the District of Massachusetts on Jan. 20 based on actions the bank took in the foreclosure attempt.
The legal claims in the case include trespass, conversion, negligence, negligent infliction of emotional distress, intentional infliction of emotional distress, interference with contractual relations, defamation and libel.
