$20 Million Settlement Reached for Veterans in ID Theft Suit

January 28, 2009

The Veterans Affairs Department agreed Tuesday to pay a total of $20 million to veterans for exposing them to possible identity theft in 2006 by losing their personal information.

In court filings on Tuesday, lawyers for the department and the veterans said they had reached an agreement to settle a class-action lawsuit filed by five veterans groups.

The money, which will come from the United States Treasury, will be used to pay veterans who can show that they suffered actual harm, ilke emotional distress or expenses incurred for credit monitoring. A Federal District Court judge in Washington must approve the terms of the settlement before it becomes final.

The case began after a laptop computer was stolen in a burglary at the Maryland home of a department data analyst. The laptop and an external drive contained data that the analyst had taken home without permission, including the names, birth dates and Social Security numbers of up to 26.5 million veterans and active-duty service members.
