The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigates most airplane accidents. The following the four categories listed by the NTSB:

• Damage Airplane Accidents — These aviation accidents are thus defined if a commercial aircraft was
  • substantially damaged and no one was seriously injured or killed
  • not substantially damaged and caused at least one serious injury
• Severe Airplane Accidents — These aviation accidents are thus defined if a commercial aircraft was
  • without substantial damage and caused one fatality
  • substantially damaged and caused at least one serious injury
• Major Airplane Accidents — These aviation accidents are thus defined if a commercial aircraft was
  • destroyed and caused multiple fatalities
  • substantially damaged and caused one fatality

Liability

Liability greatly depends on who was responsible for the airplane crash. The accident could have been caused by an error, malfunction, or defect. At times, multiple parties can be held liable for an aviation accident, including:

• Federal Government
• Maintenance Crews
• Manufacturers
• Owner/Operator
• Pilot
